Travel by Uber/shuttle (from CPT)

Stellenbosch is situated about 50km east of Cape Town International Airport (CPT).

These days Uber is probably the easiest way to get to Stellenbosch from CPT airport. Typically costs are between R250-R350.

Alternatively, several tour operators provide transport to and from the airport, to be arranged in advance:

Travel by car (from Cape Town via the N2)

From Cape Town or Cape Town International Airport (CPT), take the N2 in the direction of Stellenbosch / Somerset West.
Continue on the N2 until exit 33 (Baden Powell Drive turn off). Turn left towards Stellenbosch and continue on the R310 until the T-junction. Pass the Spier Estate on your right hand side and carry on towards Stellenbosch. At the traffic lights, drive straight through until you get to the next set of traffic lights at the T-junction.
At the T-junction with traffic lights, turn right. After approximately 2.5 kms, you will pass straight through a set of traffic lights with the headquarters of Distell on the right.
Stay on Adam Tas Road, turning left at the T-junction as it joins the R44.
At the second set of traffic lights, turn right on to Merriman Avenue.
Drive up Merriman for approximately 500m. The entrance to the Neelsie Centre parking will be on your right (shortly after an overead pedestrial pass) on De Beer Road.

Parking

There is very little visitor parking available on campus. We suggest you use the Neelsie (Student) Centre car park, located on De Beer Road just off of Merriman Avenue. Parking for the day should cost around R50.

Accommodation

Delegates are responsible for their own arrangements. Accommodation in Stellenbosch is usually at a premium in March/April so early bookings are advisable. One thing to keep in mind when you make reservations is that Stellenbosch does not have a public transport system. If you do not have your own transport, you should plan to stay within walking distance of the conference venue (see the maps above).

There are numerous bed-and-breakfast places in and around Stellenbosch. Here are few suggestions (in no particular order), all within walking distance from the conference venue. Another possiblity is to check at Airbnb.

Safety

Although Stellenbosch has always been a quiet and relatively safe town, it is not entirely free of crime. It may therefore be a good idea to take normal safety precautions at night time, such as travelling in groups and avoiding dark alleys.

Travel in the Western Cape is usually safe, but it may be a good idea to discuss any travel plans with one of the organisers. As a general rule public transport is not recommended. If you plan to do sightseeing, renting a car at the airport is a good option. Alternatively there are several rental agencies who operate in Stellenbosch. Uber is slowly increasing its presence in Stellenbosch.
