SANUM 2023

University of Johannesburg

The 44th SANUM conference takes place at the University of Johannesburg 3 - 5 April 2023

NB: SANUM to be held online

After much deliberation, back and forth and consultation with involved parties, we have decided to proceed with SANUM as an online only conference.

This is due, in part, to the looming protest action both at the University(ies) and at Helen Joseph Hospital.

Additionally, the misalignment of local university's term dates meant that many colleagues who are an integral part of the SANUM community would not be able to attend.

The LOC explored every possibility of proceeding in person but unfortunately hosting the conference off campus is not financially feasible.

We acknowledge that an in-person meeting would have been optimal after a run of cancellations/postponements of the conference, but feel that this is indeed, the prudent choice.

While we are disappointed to have to make this decision, we hope that the online medium is more accessible to colleagues during their final week of semester (getting theses submitted, tests set and marked, etc), and will ultimately lead to a more inclusive SANUM meeting.

We have extended the registration and abstract submission deadline until the 23rd of March. If you were unable to attend in person but are able to attend virtually, please register!

What is SANUM?

South African Numerical and Applied Mathematics (SANUM) is a special interest group for South African and international academics in the areas of applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing, and a yearly (typically three-day) symposium with presentations and posters on these and related topics.

The symposium typically rotates amongst host institutions: Stellenbosch University, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand and now the University of Johannesburg. It serves as the annual symposium for the Numerical and Applied Mathematics research theme of the NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE MaSS).
