Please make payment for your registration via eft by 15 February in order to still qualify for the early bird rate. After 15 February the registration amount will change to R2500, you will be re-invoiced. We can only accept eft payments. Please organise with your employer to refund you for your eft. A reminder that students can apply for funding to waiver their registration fee. The application must be received by 15 February as well.

Working on dynamical systems, delay differential equations, complex systems and networks, and applications of mathematics. Currently Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at Bilkent University. Previously at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences.
Bubacarr Bah
AIMS, Muizenberg and University of Stellenbosch, South Africa
Holds the German Research Chair of Mathematics with specialization in Data Science at AIMS South Africa and a Snr. Lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. Research Interests: Data science, compressed sensing, sparse approximation, random matrix theory, numerical analysis, inverse problems, deep learning, complex networks, communications & information theory.
Roger Deane
University of Pretoria, South Africa
Associate Professor Roger Deane is an Associate Professor of Physics at UP. He holds a BSc. in Electrical Engineering (2008) from the University of Cape Town, an MSc. in Astrophysics and Space Science (2008) from the University of Cape Town, and a D.Phil in Astrophysics (2012) from the University of Oxford. He has been an SKA Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University. Prior to joining UP he was a Senior Research Fellow at Rhodes University. Prof Deane heads an initiative to carry out deep observations of distant galaxies using the MeerKAT telescope in collaboration with Oxford University and Rhodes University. His research interests are binary supermassive black holes, strong gravitational lensing, wide-field VLBI surveys, black hole shadow detection with the Event Horizon Telescope, radio interferometry techniques, high redshift galaxies
Melina Freitag

Research interests: Numerical linear algebra, in particular iterative methods for eigenvalue problems and linear systems, Krylov subspace methods. Model order reduction, matrix theory and applications. Data assimilation and inverse problems.
Niko Sauer

Research interests: Partial differential equations, Functional Analysis, Abstract evolution equations, Navier-Stokes and related equations of Fluid Mechanics, Nonlinear acoustics, Markov processes. Achievements: Theory of B-evolutions, Empathy theory, dynamic boundary conditions, dynamic boundary conditions for the Navier-Stokes and related equations, existence and uniqueness for the equations of second grade fluids, re-formulation of nonlinear acoustics for ideal isentropic gases and thereby resolving the piston problem posed by Earnshaw in 1857 (Riemann tried, but his solution is convincing only because it is by RIEMANN).

What is SANUM?
South African Numerical and Applied Mathematics (SANUM) is a special interest group for South African and international academics in the areas of applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing, and a yearly (typically three-day) symposium with presentations and posters on these and related topics.
The symposium currently rotates between three host institutions: Stellenbosch University, the University of Pretoria, and the University of the Witwatersrand. It serves as the annual symposium for the Applied and Numerical Mathematics research theme of the NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE MaSS).
